Our Webmaster
Optimist Gord Welling
I want to welcome you to our website dedicated to providing an online home for all the Optimist members and our clubs in District 13 (AMS&NW).
As you can probably guess, I am a bit of a technical geek ... I work for a software development company and one of my responsibilities is to manage portions of their corporate website. So, I thought I would give back to the Optimist community by designing and managing our District online presence.
With our District webiste I have tried to provide a "single shopping experience" so you can find everything you might need to administer your club or run an Optimist program or activity. Our site has links to member resources, news, District meetings, descriptions of Optimist youth programs and JOOI. It also includes a zone and club listing.
2011-12 will see the extension of our District online presence with the addition of more web services. You can refer to our Web Services Catalog for additional information. If you have any suggestions, I urge you to fill out my online contact form and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
Yours in Optimism
Gord

Mission
The mission of District Web Services is to provide a dynamic, accurate and complete online presence for AMS&NW District 13.
Goals
District Web Services are available to meet the following goals:
- To provide a public identity for Optimists throughout Alberta, Montana, Saskatchewan and Northern Wyoming. To use this identity to explain what Optimist Clubs are about and how they serve their local communities. To do that we have created our District Website.
- To provide the public and our club members and Friends of Optimists an online means to contact the District Governor, the DST, Zone Lieutenant Governors, or any other member of the District Executive and District Team.
- To provide a means to inform our club members and Friends of Optimists on the regular happenings throughout the current Optimist year. Our District Blog and District Facebook Page serve as means for us to keep the public informed.
- To provide an online library of resources and information that our club members and District Team can use. Our District Website hosts sections dedicated to JOOI Clubs, Youth Programs and Member resources.
- To provide an online Directory of the Optimist clubs in communities throughout the District geographic boundaries. Pages are provided for each Zone, and there are pages to support building new clubs and signing new members.
- To provide assistance to Optimist Clubs to create and maintain their own online presence.
2011-12 Projects
2011-12 will see us extend our efforts to provide more services to our Clubs and District Team members. In particular, we hope to:
- Create a District Team Portal - using Google Sites, we will create a secure collaboration portal for the District Team including LGs.
- Extend our Online Presence - to enable more Optimist members to contribute to the District Optimist online communities, we plan to:
- Offer training workshops at District Conferences on building club websites.
- Invite members to become contributing authors on the District Blog.
- Support any Zone LG who wishes to operate a Zone Blog.
- Create a "Put Your Club Online" Blog - provide a blog dedicated to providing online guides on how to use Web 2.0 hosted services to put a club online.
- Provide Online Training - our plan is to create an online training portal to host Optimist workshops and courses.
- Provide Real-Time Conferencing - to help reduce costs and provide the ability to invite more members to participate as part of District committees, we will create an online conference portal, where registered District members can host real-time online conferences.
2010-11 Accomplishments
During Governor Gov Tim's tenure, we updated our District website. We also launched an educational blog called "How to Build a Club Website containing lesson on how to use Blogger.com to host a club website. We also assisted with the creation of a blog/website for Zone 5, Edmonton Dinner Optimist Club and the Leduc Black-Gold Optimist Club.
2009-10 Accomplishments
During Governor Darryl's tenure, we completely revamped our District website, added our District Blog, Facebook Page, and Twitter page. We linked the news feed from the District Blog so that when new articles were posted to the District Blog, links and article summaries would automatically appear on our District website, and copies of the new articles would appear in the District Facebook Page.
For a more complete list of existing and future web service projects, I invite you to look at our Web Services Projects page. If you want to find out more about creating a club website or you would like to volunteer to become a Zone Blog administrator or a contributing author, please contact me.
