District Candidate Qualifications Chair
Fellow Optimists,
Continuing to build strong and dynamic District Teams each year relies on finding suitable candidates for the position of District Governor. As your Candidate Qualifications Chair, my role is to present a slate of candidates for the position of Governor Elect for 2012-13, to serve as Governor in 2013-14.
Who is Eligible to Serve?
No one shall be eligible for election or hold a District office unless he is duly enrolled on the International roster as a member of a Club in good Standing in Optimist International; and he has held or is currently holding the office of President of an Optimist Club. (OI Bylaws Section 6.A.)
Nomination Procedures - The Candidate Qualifications Committee shall seek, qualify and nominate one or more candidates for the office of the Governor (or Governor-Elect) and shall require the following for the consideration and information of the committee:
- A written presentation of the proposed candidate’s background and qualifications for the office of Governor (or Governor-Elect).
- A letter from the Club of which the candidate is a member indicating that Club’s support of his/her candidacy.
- A statement from the proposed candidate’s employer indicating his/her understanding and approval of the proposed candidate’s anticipated commitment to serve one year as Governor-Elect and one year as Governor. If candidate is self-employed, he/she shall submit such letter on his/her own behalf.
The Candidate Qualifications Committee shall prepare a brief summary and description of each nominee’s background and qualifications to be mailed to each Club President and Secretary-Treasurer not less than thirty (30) days prior to the date of the election. This procedure need not be applied to the election of the Governor-Designate; the only candidate for the office of Governor-Designate is the incumbent Governor-Elect.
It has been the common practise to announce screened candidates by the 3rd Quarter District Conference and hold the election at the District Annual Convention. Screening by the committee can take some time, so we urge you to submit nomination papers as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, or would like to nominate someone, or need assistance with running a Zone election for the position of Lieutenant Governor, I urge you to use the contact form on this page.
